The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collects and publishes inland water observations—streamgages, lake levels, and related datasets—that feed many third-party lake apps and research products.

Why it matters on the water

When you check a creek inflow gauge or compare a tailwater reading to a reservoir stage, you are often looking at USGS infrastructure or USGS-curated time series. USGS emphasizes consistent metadata—location, datum, and measurement type—so a stage reading can be traced back to a real sensor.

On managed reservoirs, USGS may operate companion gages upstream or downstream even when the pool guide comes from USACE or a utility.

Is USGS the same as USACE for lake levels?

No. USACE publishes operating pools and many project gages; USGS often runs hydrologic gages on connected rivers. Both can appear on one lake page through different data paths.

How does Lake Insights use USGS?

Where a lake’s catalog or live feed includes USGS endpoints, stage and metadata flow into the lake’s level chart and source attribution. Availability varies by lake.
