Tailwater

Tailwater is the river reach immediately downstream of a dam—where releases shape stage and current. Tailwater gauges can rise while the reservoir pool looks stable, or the reverse during drawdown.

Why it matters

Anglers below dams watch tailwater current and clarity; reservoir anglers watch pool stage. They are hydraulically linked through discharge but measured at different points—compare like locations.

Tailwater and flood stage

Flood stage on a downstream USGS gage can trigger advisories even when the pool remains below full pool. Both readings can be correct at once.
